The day we got to ride a little elephant. [Dec. 14th, 2009|12:45 am]

That's me peeking around the side, Kyrie O'Connor riding, her brother Geoffrey checking out Lollipop the elephant's flank, and cdozo trying to figure out a way to fit Lollipop in the car so we could take her home. I think this was around 1960 somewhere in southwestern CT, but I can't remember where it was or why we got to do this. It was fun though, I remember that.

The Geminid Shower a few years ago was the best meteor shower I've ever seen. They just kept going. It was freezing, but spectacularly worth bundling up for (if you like that sort of thing). I hope it's a clear night.

From NASA: "Make hot cocoa. Bundle up. Tell your friends. The best meteor shower of 2009 is about to fall over North America on a long, cold December night.

"It's the Geminid meteor shower," says Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office. "and it will peak on Dec. 13th and 14th under ideal viewing conditions." ...

"According to the International Meteor Organization, maximum activity should occur around 12:10 a.m. EST (0510 UT) on Dec. 14th. The peak is broad, however, and the night sky will be rich with Geminids for many hours and perhaps even days around the maximum.

"Cooke offers this advice: "Watch the sky during the hours around local midnight. For North Americans, this means Sunday night to Monday morning." ...

There's probably a rational explanation for this... [Dec. 9th, 2009|11:53 am]

[music |space, spies, tsa, computers, noobs]

Cool, strange lights in the sky over Norway this morning. There are a couple of videos here and spaceweather.com's report is here (2nd item).

In other fun, the TSA accidentally uploaded their entire screening manual, thinking that they had redacted all the secret parts. But PDFs don't work like regular documents and, at least for now, you can download a copy with the "redacted" parts highlighted in red. (Of course maybe it's a tricky trick and the REAL secret manual is safe as houses somewhere, but it's still an interesting read.)
